In this guide, we’ll walk through the steps of setting up a Telegram bot token, and configuring it in the Snapture application in order to poll messages.

Currently our application only supports Telegram group chat.

Why user needs to create token?

The reasons of creating the Telegram bot token directly, rather than allowing the application to create it on the user's behalf are:

1. Ownership and Control: The user (bot owner) is the sole entity with control over the bot’s behavior and its access to Telegram Bot API.

2. Prevent Unauthorized Access: The user can reset or revoke the token without needing to go through our application.

How our application use the token?

1. Once you configure the bot token in our application, you are granting us permission to interact with the Telegram Bot API on your behalf.

2. This enables us to poll messages from the group chat where your bot is a member.

3. Please ensure that you only set the token for the desired group chat such that our application has access only to that particular chat.

Create a new bot

Search for BotFather in Telegram or use this link @BotFather in Telegram web— the official bot for creating new bots. Start a conversation with /newbot. Once you’ve chosen a name and username, a token will be generated for your bot.

Disable privacy mode

Edit the privacy mode of the newly created bot. Enter /mybotsin BotFather, then choose the created bot. Select Bot Settings > Group Privacy > Turn off

Add bot into group chat

Assign the bot (search by the bot's username from step 1, e.g. @<your_bot>) as admin to the group chat.

Set up token in the application

Add the token on the Token Settings page/ Create new project with the token. The token format is similar to123456789:ABCDEFghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz1234567890

Start the bot

The newly created bot can be found by searching the username from step 1 (e.g. @<your_bot>), or in the bots list by sending /mybotsin BotFather.

Then, enter /start in the bot's chat.

Troubleshooting

Cannot poll messages after token setup ?

1. Ensure that step 2 (Disable privacy mode) is correctly configured. Make sure it's turned off and try again.

2. If you've followed the steps above but still isn't working, revoke the current token and regenerate a new one. Then, update the token in the Token Settings page with the new one.
